SORRY I BORKED THE FIRST POLL. THE TWO PEOPLE WHO ALREADY HAD, PLEASE VOTE AGAIN. You now have the option to check multiple boxes.

I've been getting very conflicting feedback concerning some of the existing meme rules, so I thought it would be good to have a poll.

This poll will be open until 31st July. The rules that result out of this poll will be final for at least a while. If you want your opinion to be included, please vote.

Poll #1762155 What rules is the majority of the comm ok with?
This poll is closed.

What rules is the majority of the comm ok with?

4thing 5thing 6thing is ok
4thing 5thing 6thing takes up too much space
We want some freeze periods
We never want any freeze periods
We want a one week freeze period between rounds
We never want any break between rounds

I think having a break between rounds is a good idea, but I think 2-3 days would be better than a week, there's time to catch up a bit without so much time that people forget about it and move on.

I hate freeze periods. All they do is make me not want to come here because everything's slowed to a crawl. I noticed a lot more people said "I'm less tempted to write fills during a freeze" than "I really love freeze periods."

I also don't get the point of a break between rounds. I don't want a week of no anon meme.

one week is waaaay too much for such a still growing fandom. there is no point of a break in between different parts because they only serve the same purpose of a freeze period.

and freeze periods won't do a single thing if people aren't willing to fill.

"we hit 6000 comments, get filling" isn't going to motivate anyone who doesn't want to write to write more. and those who are writing perhaps are already writing 500 other fics and don't need someone to be bossing them around to hurrying up with their writing.

i can see the freeze period help the authors to catch up with their writing in time for some new requests, but without a goal in sight, who is to say how long the freeze period would last? and fills that no one is interested in will not be filled regardless of the freeze or not.

at this point, this kink meme has really slowed down. the maximum amount of comments to a post is 10 000. a freeze period at 5000 comments would make a little sense-- lasting about 3-4 days or so without breaks between rounds. if needed, freeze periods can be increased according to fandom development, growth and demand.

as a mostly just filling anon, i have to say that i hate freeze periods. there isn't an overwhelming amount of requests like the hetalia kink meme(where it was almost 2 pages per hour at one point)... and if there are requests that no one is interested in filling, a freeze period would not help them get filled.

in fact, the new requests help spur on ideas and i really hate forcing myself to write when i am not in the mood to write at all.

the thing with hetalia is that they have a certain number of fills they must complete before the freeze period is lifted-- and their fandom is big enough to support that demand. with t&b not being as huge just yet, this freeze period is something you can implement later on because it is not useful at this moment.

and the beginning of the hetalia kink meme from parts 1-5 or so, there were no freeze periods implemented until filling anons had begged for them and the mods had spent hours meticulously formulating a system that works for them... and every fandom is different.

this is just my two cents. (and using hetalia as a reference because this meme's rules sort of echo from that meme and they do have a system that works)

i am more concerned about anonymity being adhered to(and the moderator really pushing this rule) because it really ticks me off when people are not bothering to post anonymously(as the rest of us know how annoying it is to type in the recaptcha). for sure, they can de-anon elsewhere. but there is no point in calling this an anonymous kink meme when no one is stickling to this rule within community.

Could you delete comments that aren't anonymous?

Encourage posting to UPDATE POST?

I am concerned about the people who feel the need to critique a fill without author!anon requesting the critique.

This really blows the writer!anons off, seeing people like them trolling around fics to hand their Godly opinions, too. It is also a good source of wank.

This place is to enjoy fills, not to critique them. If the person wants to be critiqued, they can say so. If not, then they should just be glad that there are even people filling some of these requests-- because if you are thinking about a freeze period, then who will be filling those prompts? These writer!anons who are being hassled with "your writing needs to be professional, so you cannot add Japanese honorifics into an English speaking fan fiction".

This blows. Literally. Please input some rules for the anons to respect the writer!anons and not to critique unless it's asked for.

I hope you are still checking these pages. :) Thanks for your hard work.

Don't worry. I'm still checking these pages. It's just been a bit slow and hard (some days impossible) to get on livejournal with the recent DDoS attack.

Now... this request is hard for me to decide on on a whim, based on one request and the fact that I know I never feel quite comfortable about "no concrit" rules because of my personal opinions on the matter. But I'm not outright saying no, either.

So, what I'm gonna do about this is that tomorrow, after the current poll on the set of rules contested a few weeks ago is finished, I'm going to put up a poll on the "no concrit" rule and let the community decide. It's the only way I can make sure that more than one person and I get an input on this.

I hope that's ok.

It's not that concrit is in anyway bad or anything. Some people just don't ask for concrit and other people have a bad way of presenting their concrit to those who do ask for it. If you don't want to discourage concrit, please consider putting in a "concrit nicely" rule? Being a writer on a kink meme of all things, seeing people concrit on a begging, crying and completely submissive Barnaby seems almost out of the world. But I guess that is just my personal opinion, much like your stand on establishing a rule for concrit.

I must say that this was brought to my attention when someone was was concriting this thread right here:

There is no problem with a suggestion, but the concrit itself was worded like a demand. Instead of "maybe you can put a line break here to help with the confusion when switching POVs" they had written "could you use a line break between Kotetsu and Bunny's POVs, or write it all from one perspective?"

Because we are an online community, we cannot see each other or know what the other's intentions are. Whether they were ill-intended or not, the words that we use in this community is taken very seriously for the lack of other communication we have. I truly am not opposed to concrit, but when someone tells me to do something compared to someone suggesting that I try something different, it is two very different feelings I have.

Of course, this also nearly erupted into wank until author!anon had stepped in. But I think choosing words carefully is a very important thing in an online, anonymous kink meme. Since another example was the Nathan request drama a while back. The post itself could have been worded a little more carefully for those who are sensitive to things like that. Granted, this being a kink meme and anything goes, kink shaming should definitely be banned.

Perhaps if the author!anon is asking for concrit, it can be brought to a discussion post somewhere? Since concrit also spawns a lot of discussion itself, it will end up taking a lot of comment space.

I just feel that if someone did not ask for concrit, then it is best to enjoy the story as it is since it's a kink meme and not a "How's My Driving?" meme or if concrit can be given, anons can be nicer about it rather than the "do as I say" attitude.

That type of attitude is bound to scare away certain author!anons.

Just an explanation for the sudden suggestion.

And excuse my typos. :( The words that we use in this community *are taken very seriously...

I do realise how different things can come across online. And we have a rule against unfriendly concrit. It's the exact same one I put in about every public post that anons are to respect each other. And in the cases that does not happen, when I see it, I step in and otherwise I ask people to please let me know so I can step in and delete what is necessary. We do also now have a mod contact post for those who don't want to or can't PM me.

But on the other hand, I think that if you post your writing publicly on the internet, you make it accessible to public opinion and not everyone is going to like it. It's just a risk that every single one of us takes (I write fanfic too, just more in another fandom than this one). That does, by no means mean I condone flaming, but I think concrit is ok.

I also personally didn't think that person in the thread was being rude. As for the Nathan prompt that had nothing to do with concrit. That was simply kink shaming and wank and has been dealt with.

So, to end this ramble... I understand your concerns, but I'm for letting people concrit on this meme without having to walk on eggshells as long as they don't flame. So, the choices are to simply leave things as are or make a poll on it.

I've put rules in place for people to be nice to each other, but... to be honest, and hoping that I don't come across as too much of an ass, I can't check every single word on this meme at all times and wonder if it's going to offend someone or something. Sometimes, with non-flamey things, one just has to deal with the fact that someone else has a different opinion or isn't behaving quite the way you'd like them to. I am, however still prepared to do that poll when I can. I realised earlier, while lj let me close the previous one it won't let me make any posts to the comm at the moment, so it might be a few days yet.

I suppose it's just a matter of people taking each word into consideration because I personally have not commented on that thread(since my experience with previous anonymous kink memes have taught me "do not engage"), so there are fellow anons who also found it rude the way the concrit is presented. *shrug*

And because we all understand that you cannot check everything there, the rules are created to make all our lives a little easier.

As for the Nathan wank, I brought it up as an example as to how words can be taken the wrong way and people feel the need to shout out about it. But with or without this example, I find that the wording a request is different from wording a concrit.

Maybe you can put up an example as to what a nice concrit would be compared to one that is not as nice? (Ex: "the format of your fan fic is a little hard to read... maybe you should double space it to avoid the wall of text" vs "could you double space your fic? it's really hard to read"). Then ask fellow anons who roll around this community to report the ones that they don't find very pleasant and let you make the decision in the end. Of course, this is for the sake of the author!anons who A) cannot take concrit very well B) are sensitive toward concrit. And while the author!anon might not have any problems with it, this will also solve the problem with other anons who find it rude and suddenly jumping the gun on the critique!anon who is trying to be helpful and in the end, everyone is trying to be helpful but nothing is really getting across to anyone and it become a big mess of misunderstandings.

Surely, you cannot please everyone in the world and you don't have to tread on eggshells around anyone. But when providing concrit, it's nice to have it gently given to you as well instead of slapping you across the face with it-- or tactless, as some people might call it.

It makes me a little uncomfortable raising such a big fuss for you to make a poll out of it... Because I am seriously not condemning concrit, but I am wishing that people would be a little more careful with their words when concrit can be a sensitive thing (since a lot of people may take it as an attack which is the thing that we all want to avoid).

Or simply just tack on a rule that says "anything you see and you think is not appropriate for the meme, contact the mod and the mod will deal with it. Please do not engage" and see what happens (yay, mod contact post being put to good use!) ?

I'm not quite sure.

But in the end, it's all up to you, right?

Ok, no poll then. I'd prefer that too. I just like polls for issues where I'm personally conflicted or if I get a barrage of opposing comments on it.

Anyway. I'll add a note on appropriate concriting to the rules and can also mention it in the rules update post I'll be making as soon as lj lets me.

LJ has been a big butt lately. I hope it gets fixed soon.

And thanks for your hard work again! ♥ Sorry if that came off as a little overly opinionated. And no, you're not an asshole, mod. :)

These things need to be discussed and we were discussing like mature adults. Nope, no assholes here!
